The HK-PTMS-MS-RGB is part of the HANKUN variable message sign range, built for road authorities, contractors and rental fleets that need a legible, power-autonomous message sign at the roadside. It is a mid-size trailer-mounted full-colour variable message sign (VMS); the display matrix, active display area and character height are confirmed at the platform selection stage and published when the platform is released.
PCMS
In North America this class of equipment is called a portable changeable message sign, or PCMS — the name used in procurement documents for a trailer-mounted unit of this size.
Trailer VMS
In Australia and New Zealand the trailer-mounted version of this equipment is specified as a trailer-mounted VMS board, per AS 4852.2 practice.
Trailer VMS
UK and European road authorities and contractors refer to the trailer-mounted version as a mobile VMS or trailer-mounted VMS in tenders and specifications.
— Core Characteristics
01
Text and graphic content on one display. Full-colour RGB panels are full-matrix displays with individually addressed pixels; the published graphic capability is confirmed with the platform.
02
To be confirmed, pending platform selection. Character height depends on the character matrix selected, so the two are always published together.
03
Published with the platform — a full-colour RGB matrix, with the LEDs-per-pixel figure stated alongside it.
04
Published with the platform. The illuminated area is stated separately from the cabinet, so the two figures can be quoted independently.
05
To be confirmed — full-colour graphic and text formats, stated together with the number of characters per line.
06
Full-colour RGB.
07
Published with the platform. Trailer-mounted with a road-tow configuration.
08
Automatic dimming — display brightness and grey level are adjusted to ambient light conditions; a manual brightness setting is also available. The display therefore draws less power in low light, which extends the working time available from the solar array and battery bank.
09
Powder-coated and oven-baked finish. 2,000 lb (907 kg) capacity; 5-on-4.5 in. bolt-circle idler hub. Double-eye leaf spring group, 1.5 t (3,300 lb) gross capacity. Wheel track 1,800–2,200 mm matched to the active display area. Tires ST205/75 D15. Lifting: electro-hydraulic; manual winch (optional).
10
4G; GPS position reporting. Message management from phone, tablet or PC. Open API and SDK protocol provided, for integration into an existing fleet management platform.
11
This page states what is confirmed and what is not. Confirmed for this model: the solar array, battery, chassis and lifting figures. The display matrix, active display area and character height are listed as to be confirmed rather than estimated, so nothing on this page is a placeholder value.
12
Every figure published on this page — the solar array, battery, chassis and lifting values — is taken from the released engineering drawings and is internally re-checkable, so it can be quoted in a project specification. Display figures will follow the same route when the platform is released.

Rapid deployment at short notice. Road-tow trailer mounting with an independent solar array means no site power arrangement and no cabling, and the full-colour panel carries the message in colour rather than in a single amber. Display matrix, active display area and character height are published with the platform.

Staged traffic control across a day or a weekend. The full-colour panel separates the parking instruction from the access instruction by colour, and the trailer is towed into position between gates rather than built into the site. Message format and line count are confirmed with the released platform.

Long-term placement inside a site. The cabinet and the mounting footprint are published with the platform, so depot space and the standing position can be planned against the release rather than against an estimate. Power is on board, so no site supply is arranged.

The HK-PTMS-MS-RGB is planned for trailer-mounted configuration. The other mounting platform is confirmed per project, because the release scope is set when the platform is released.
§ MUTCD Part 6 (Chapter 6F)
§ MUTCD Table 2E-4
US practice sets letter height from the posted approach speed. MUTCD Part 6 (Chapter 6F) gives 18 in (457 mm) as the minimum letter height for a portable changeable message sign and permits shorter letters on low-speed facilities; Table 2E-4 adds that 450 mm (18 in) should be used where speeds are greater than 90 km/h (55 mph), in persistently poor weather, or where the driving task is complex. Messages are limited to two phases, and animation, flashing and scrolling are not used.
For North America the requirement is the one named alongside. The HK-PTMS-MS-RGB is in development, so the character height that decides the fit is published with the released figures rather than estimated now.
§ AS 1742.3:2019
§ State roadworks guidance
AS 1742.3:2019 and the state roadworks guidance size characters to the approach speed, at roughly 120 mm for 60 km/h approaches and 160–200 mm for 80 km/h approaches, with the larger alphabet series applied to high-speed and multi-lane works. The sign face is confirmed with the road authority for each project.
For Australia the requirement is the one named alongside. The HK-PTMS-MS-RGB is in development, so the character height that decides the fit is published with the released figures rather than estimated now.
§ NZTA CoP for Temporary Traffic Management
§ Published NZ figures for LED message signs
The NZTA Code of Practice for Temporary Traffic Management sets a temporary speed limit at least 20 km/h below the normal limit, gated across the carriageway, with repeat signs at 400 m intervals. The published NZ figures for LED message signs set characters at not smaller than 300 mm inside a 50 km/h area and not smaller than 400 mm elsewhere.
For New Zealand the requirement is the one named alongside. The HK-PTMS-MS-RGB is in development, so the character height that decides the fit is published with the released figures rather than estimated now.
§ Traffic Signs Manual Ch. 8, Table A1.2
§ TSRGD 2016
The UK sizes characters by x-height rather than cap height. Traffic Signs Manual Chapter 8 (Table A1.2) runs from 62.5 mm at 30 mph to 200 mm on dual carriageways at the national speed limit, and TSRGD 2016 sets the legal x-height limits at 35 mm to 400 mm, so a cap-height figure has to be converted before it can be placed in that table.
For the UK the requirement is the one named alongside. The HK-PTMS-MS-RGB is in development, so the character height that decides the fit is published with the released figures rather than estimated now.
§ EN 12966:2014+A1:2018
EN 12966:2014+A1:2018 classifies a variable message sign on luminance, beam width, colour and luminance ratio, with a temperature class. The class required follows the road type, the viewing geometry and the climate at the site, and it is stated per configuration rather than as a single figure.
For Europe the requirement is the one named alongside. The HK-PTMS-MS-RGB is in development, so the character height that decides the fit is published with the released figures rather than estimated now.
For a scheme still being drawn, the HK-PTMS-MS-RGB is recorded as a full-colour RGB platform in development, and the released figures are sent to you before the page is published.
The released figures for the HK-PTMS-MS-RGB will carry the cabinet and the matrix together, so a fleet can plan depot space and the quoting sheet before the platform is published.
Registering interest puts a rental fleet in front of the release: the cabinet and matrix figures arrive together, and the unit can be matched to a contract the day the platform is published.
The HK-PTMS-MS-RGB is recorded now, so an event programme can be planned against a release rather than against a guess.

Monochrome text boards are often overlooked by drivers working through a busy urban corridor. A full-colour RGB matrix renders recognised multi-colour safety symbols — red warning rings, green directional arrows, yellow hazard triangles — alongside crisp text, which extends recognition distance and shortens the reaction window compared with an all-amber board.

Full-size highway trailers take lane width a city arterial does not have, and the queue behind them becomes a second incident. The mid-size trailer keeps the roadside footprint smaller, so a crew can place the sign on a shoulder, a kerb or the margin of a closed lane.

A full-colour RGB matrix draws more than a single-colour panel, and in a downtown corridor the panel can sit in building shadow for most of the day. HANKUN pairs LED modules with a 2 × 360 W array, 2 × 250 Ah AGM storage, MPPT charging and automatic dimming, so the array and battery are sized to the market rather than to a test condition.
Inner-city utility repairs, resurfacing and lane closures. The mid-size mobile variable message sign gives lane-merge arrows and speed advisories without blocking active traffic.

Stadium events, parades and municipal gatherings. The foldable variable message sign trailer is towed into position to direct parking flow, shuttle routes and pedestrian safety advisories.

A high-visibility variable message sign in tunnel warning board position: set before the portal, it delivers hazard alerts, height-restriction warnings and lane-availability graphics.

Integrated with Doppler radar, the unit runs as a dynamic variable speed limit sign — showing driver speed with a colour-coded warning in school zones or high-accident corridors.

“Upgrading our contractor fleet to HANKUN’s Mid-Size Full-Colour RGB Trailer VMS has made a massive difference in driver compliance around active job sites. The full-colour graphics are sharp and visible from a long way back. The mid-size chassis fits into tight urban spots without effort, and single-operator setup takes under five minutes.”
“As a traffic equipment rental supplier we needed an advanced variable message sign that delivers full-colour graphic versatility with rock-solid reliability. HANKUN provided top-tier manufacturing quality at a very competitive variable message signs price. Solar performance has been flawless, and remote 4G cloud scheduling saves our technicians hours of drive time.”
Matrix not yet chosen → line count open → character height open → published together
Character height and line count are the same decision, and the HK-PTMS-MS-RGB publishes neither before the platform is released: a matrix that is not yet chosen cannot state how many lines fit at what character height. That is why the two figures are published together, and why neither is estimated in the meantime.
Full-colour RGB → blended colour → separate product family → never combined with five-colour
Colour is what a full-colour RGB platform is for, and it is also why the HK-PTMS-MS-RGB is a separate product family from the five-colour models: five-colour is a discrete per-colour display with no blending, so the two are never combined on one board.
Own power on board → no mains connection → no generator, no cabling → cabinet and power stated together
The full-colour RGB platform is planned with the power arrangement of its class rather than on a mains connection, so the released figures for the HK-PTMS-MS-RGB will state the power arrangement and the cabinet together.

The HK-PTMS-MS-RGB is one of four full-colour RGB platforms held for release in the 19-model range, and it is the mid-size trailer-mounted entry. It sits above the published amber and five-colour models rather than beside them: those are offered for specification today, this platform is not. Nothing on this page is estimated — the five specification groups are published together when the platform is released.
The five groups — active display area, character height with its matrix, pixel structure, display colour and cabinet dimensions — are the whole basis on which this model will be chosen, and they are published together.

— Procurement Case
01
A planned full-colour RGB platform, so it carries no published figures yet. The amber and five-colour models on the same platform are published with all five specification groups and can be specified today.
02
Because the HK-PTMS-MS-RGB is not released, it is not offered for quotation. Registering interest means the released figures reach you before the page is published.
03
The platform is planned for trailer-mounted configuration with its own solar power, so the site needs no generator and no cabling, and the compliance path for your market is confirmed at the configuration stage.
04
Every figure is either published with the platform or listed as to be confirmed. The five groups arrive together at release rather than one at a time.
— Before You Specify
Model, Display & Compliance
Not yet. The full-colour RGB mid-size platform is in development and its display figures are published when the platform is released. The amber and five-colour models on the same mid-size trailer are published today with all five specification groups and can be specified now.
A mid-size full-colour RGB trailer-mounted VMS renders graphics on a full-matrix panel, so official multi-colour traffic symbols — a red speed-limit ring, a green lane arrow, a yellow hazard triangle — can sit alongside variable text on the same display. Colour-coded symbols are picked out faster than monochrome text in a busy urban corridor. On the HK-PTMS-MS-RGB the pixel structure and character height are published when the platform is released.
The platform is offered with MUTCD configuration options for North America, and NEMA TS-4 testing is available on request. Because the sign is configured per project, conformance is confirmed against the project specification before shipment rather than claimed for every build, and the compliance path for the destination market is fixed at the configuration stage.
Power, Towing & Integration
Power is sized at the configuration stage: a 2 × 360 W solar array (720 W total), 2 × 250 Ah AGM deep-cycle storage and an MPPT controller at 30–40 A charge current, with automatic dimming cutting draw in low light. A full-colour RGB matrix draws more than a single-colour panel, so the array and battery are selected against the insolation profile of the destination market rather than carried over from an amber build.
The chassis is a road-tow build: powder-coated and oven-baked finish, a 2,000 lb (907 kg) axle with a 5-on-4.5 in. idler hub, a double-eye leaf spring group rated 1.5 t (3,300 lb) gross, ST205/75 D15 tires and a wheel track of 1,800–2,200 mm. Complete trailer weight and overall transport dimensions are confirmed per configuration.
Vehicle speed radar is a published option on this platform family. Fitted with Doppler radar the unit runs as a dynamic speed limit display, showing the measured speed with a colour-coded warning. On the HK-PTMS-MS-RGB the radar is confirmed as a configuration item when the platform is released.
Message management runs from a phone, tablet or PC over 4G, with GPS position reporting. An open API and SDK protocol is provided for integration into an existing fleet management platform. Whether the controller supports NTCIP 1203 is confirmed per configuration.
Applications, Cost & Procurement
The mid-size trailer keeps the roadside footprint smaller than a full-size highway unit, which is what matters at a tunnel portal or inside a parking structure. Cabinet dimensions for the HK-PTMS-MS-RGB are published with the platform, so clearance is checked against the released figure rather than assumed.
A mid-size unit keeps full-colour impact while occupying a smaller roadside footprint, which matters on narrow city streets and multi-lane arterials where a full-size trailer creates a second bottleneck. Inside the range the choice is made on active display area first, then on colour and pixel structure.
Send the market, the duty and the message set to our sales engineering team. Factory-direct pricing is quoted per unit and for volume municipal orders against an agreed configuration list. The HK-PTMS-MS-RGB itself is not quoted yet — registering interest puts you in front of the release — while the published amber and five-colour models on the same trailer can be quoted today.
HANKUN builds trailer-mounted VMS units with powder-coated, oven-baked chassis, solar power sized to the destination market, and a factory inspection record per unit: module burn-in before assembly, full-screen illumination test, structural and sealing inspection of the cabinet and frame, and a pre-shipment re-check against the agreed configuration list. Enclosure protection rating is confirmed per configuration.
