The HK-PTMS-CS-RGB is part of the HANKUN variable message sign range, built for road authorities, contractors and rental fleets that need a legible, power-autonomous message sign at the roadside. It is a compact trailer-mounted full-colour variable message sign (VMS), and its published figures are taken from the released engineering drawings.
PCMS
In North America this class of equipment is called a portable changeable message sign, or PCMS — which is how this model is specified.
Trailer VMS
In Australia and New Zealand the trailer-mounted version of this equipment is called a trailer-mounted VMS board, per AS 4852.2 practice.
Trailer VMS
UK and European road authorities and contractors refer to the trailer-mounted version as a mobile VMS or trailer-mounted VMS in tenders and specifications.
— Core Characteristics
01
Text and graphic content on one display. Full-colour RGB panels are full-matrix displays with individually addressed pixels, so message text and safety symbols share one panel; the published graphic capability is confirmed with the platform.
02
TBC — pending platform selection. Character height depends on the character matrix selected, so the two are always published together rather than separately.
03
Published with the platform — pixel matrix, pixel structure and the addressable LED arrangement are released as one set of figures.
04
Published with the platform, stated separately from the cabinet so the illuminated area can be quoted on its own.
05
TBC — full-colour graphic and text formats, stated together with the number of characters per line so the message layout is not assumed.
06
Full-colour RGB. A full-matrix panel renders multi-colour symbols and text from the same pixels, unlike a discrete per-colour five-colour panel.
07
Published with the platform — cabinet dimensions, depth and border basis are confirmed with the display matrix, not estimated before it.
08
Automatic dimming — display brightness and grey level are adjusted to ambient light conditions; a manual brightness setting is also available. The display therefore draws less power in low light, which extends the working time available from the solar array and battery bank.
09
Powder-coated and oven-baked finish. 2,000 lb (907 kg) capacity; 5-on-4.5 in. bolt-circle idler hub. Double-eye leaf spring group, 1.5 t (3,300 lb) gross capacity. Wheel track 1,800–2,200 mm matched to the active display area. Tires ST205/75 D15. Lifting: electro-hydraulic; manual winch (optional).
10
4G; GPS position reporting. Message management from phone, tablet or PC. Open API and SDK protocol provided, for integration into an existing fleet management platform.
11
This page states what is confirmed and what is not. Confirmed for this model: the solar array, battery, chassis and lifting figures, the dimming behaviour and the remote-operation package. The display-side figures — matrix, active display area and character height — are listed as to be confirmed rather than estimated, so nothing on this page is a placeholder value.
12
Every figure that will be published — the display matrix, the active display area in mm and in, and the character height — is taken from the released engineering drawings and is internally re-checkable, so the numbers can be quoted in a project specification.

Work zones on multi-lane arterial roads. A full-colour panel lets the lane-merge arrow and the closure instruction sit on one screen instead of in sequence, and a compact trailer reaches a kerbside position a full-size highway unit cannot. Active display area and character height are published with the platform.

Tight corridors and junction works. The chassis is sized for a single bay or a narrow shoulder, and full-colour symbols let the closure line be separated from the supporting text. Cabinet and matrix figures follow the platform release rather than being estimated here.

Diversions that need two or three lines rather than a full programme. A full-colour message keeps the closure and the direction together and lets the priority line carry its own colour; the message format is stated with the released figures.

Rapid deployment at short notice. Road-tow trailer mounting with an independent solar array means no site power arrangement and no cabling — 2 × 360 W of solar and 2 × 250 Ah AGM storage are confirmed for this platform. Paired with a Doppler radar the same unit runs as a dynamic speed limit display.

Staged traffic control across a day or a weekend. Full-colour graphics suit sites that carry a priority item beside routine instructions, so the marshalling instruction is picked out from the parking and access lines on the same panel.

Long-term placement inside a site. Character height is set by the position on the road and is published with the platform; the trailer chassis — 2,000 lb axle, leaf-spring group, ST205/75 D15 tyres — is confirmed for road tow.
§ MUTCD Part 6 (Chapter 6F)
§ MUTCD Table 2E-4
US practice sets letter height from the posted approach speed. MUTCD Part 6 (Chapter 6F) gives 18 in (457 mm) as the minimum letter height for a portable changeable message sign and permits shorter letters on low-speed facilities; Table 2E-4 adds that 450 mm (18 in) should be used where speeds are greater than 90 km/h (55 mph), in persistently poor weather, or where the driving task is complex. Messages are limited to two phases, and animation, flashing and scrolling are not used.
For North America the requirement is the one named alongside. The HK-PTMS-CS-RGB is in development, so the character height that decides the fit is published with the released figures rather than estimated now.
§ AS 1742.3:2019
§ State roadworks guidance
AS 1742.3:2019 and the state roadworks guidance size characters to the approach speed, at roughly 120 mm for 60 km/h approaches and 160–200 mm for 80 km/h approaches, with the larger alphabet series applied to high-speed and multi-lane works. The sign face is confirmed with the road authority for each project.
For Australia the requirement is the one named alongside. The HK-PTMS-CS-RGB is in development, so the character height that decides the fit is published with the released figures rather than estimated now.
§ NZTA CoP for Temporary Traffic Management
§ Published NZ figures for LED message signs
The NZTA Code of Practice for Temporary Traffic Management sets a temporary speed limit at least 20 km/h below the normal limit, gated across the carriageway, with repeat signs at 400 m intervals. The published NZ figures for LED message signs set characters at not smaller than 300 mm inside a 50 km/h area and not smaller than 400 mm elsewhere.
For New Zealand the requirement is the one named alongside. The HK-PTMS-CS-RGB is in development, so the character height that decides the fit is published with the released figures rather than estimated now.
§ Traffic Signs Manual Ch. 8, Table A1.2
§ TSRGD 2016
The UK sizes characters by x-height rather than cap height. Traffic Signs Manual Chapter 8 (Table A1.2) runs from 62.5 mm at 30 mph to 200 mm on dual carriageways at the national speed limit, and TSRGD 2016 sets the legal x-height limits at 35 mm to 400 mm, so a cap-height figure has to be converted before it can be placed in that table.
For the United Kingdom the requirement is the one named alongside. The HK-PTMS-CS-RGB is in development, so the character height that decides the fit is published with the released figures rather than estimated now.
§ EN 12966:2014+A1:2018
EN 12966:2014+A1:2018 classifies a variable message sign on luminance, beam width, colour and luminance ratio, with a temperature class. The class required follows the road type, the viewing geometry and the climate at the site, and it is stated per configuration rather than as a single figure.
For Europe the requirement is the one named alongside. The HK-PTMS-CS-RGB is in development, so the character height that decides the fit is published with the released figures rather than estimated now.
For a scheme still being drawn, the HK-PTMS-CS-RGB is recorded as a full-colour RGB platform in development, and the released figures are sent to you before the page is published.
The released figures for the HK-PTMS-CS-RGB will carry the cabinet and the matrix together, so a fleet can plan depot space and quoting before the platform is published — rather than budgeting against a placeholder.
The HK-PTMS-CS-RGB is recorded now, so an event programme can be planned against a release rather than against a guess, and the configuration is agreed with the venue before the first site visit.

Drivers navigating dense commercial districts are overwhelmed by roadside neon and static sign boards, and they stop reading a single-colour text panel. A full-colour RGB VMS renders high-contrast warning graphics — red stop rings, green lane arrows, amber caution symbols — beside the text, which shortens the time a driver needs to recognise the instruction.

Full-size highway trailers block bike lanes, narrow kerbs and active travel lanes in congested city centres. The compact portable variable message sign is planned on a reduced wheel-base chassis that sets up inside a single parking bay, a narrow shoulder or a crowded construction margin.

Continuous operation of an RGB LED matrix in a shaded urban corridor drains a battery bank quickly. HANKUN pairs an efficient LED module design with 2 × 360 W of solar charging, 2 × 250 Ah AGM storage and automatic optical dimming, so the unit works between service visits without an auxiliary generator.
Ideal for inner-city water line repairs, cable laying and sidewalk closures. The compact portable message board provides immediate lane-merge arrows and hazard alerts without disrupting active traffic lanes.

Perfect for arena traffic, festival parking direction and crowded pedestrian crossings. Operators can reposition the mobile message sign to manage shuttle routes and live parking availability in full RGB colour.

An effective variable message sign in tunnel portal advisory display, placed before subterranean entrances to warn drivers of height restrictions, internal congestion or lane availability in full colour.

Integrated with Doppler speed radar, the unit runs as a dynamic variable speed limit sign, showing colour-coded speed feedback — green for compliant, red for speeding — to slow traffic near school crosswalks.

“Upgrading our municipal service fleet to HANKUN’s compact trailer VMS platform has solved our inner-city traffic management problems. The full-colour graphics are sharp, so detour arrows are noticed at a glance, and the compact footprint fits the roadside spots a full-size trailer cannot take. One operator sets it up in minutes.”
“As an equipment rental supplier we need a variable message sign that combines visual performance with durability, and HANKUN delivers both at a competitive variable message signs price. The solar autonomy holds up across a season of hires, and 4G scheduling saves our field team a site visit every time the message changes.”
One matrix · layout follows the message
character matrix→lines per screen→character height
one matrix→no figure before release
Character height and line count are the same decision, and the HK-PTMS-CS-RGB publishes neither before the platform is released: a matrix that is not yet chosen cannot state how many lines fit at what character height, which is why neither figure is published before the platform is released.
Full-colour RGB · a separate product family
RGB full-matrix→colour blending
five-colour→discrete per-colour · no blending
Colour is what a full-colour RGB platform is for, and it is also why the HK-PTMS-CS-RGB is a separate product family from the five-colour models: five-colour is a discrete per-colour display with no blending, so the two are never combined on one board.
Power on board · site off the brief
Solar + battery→no generator
no cabling→trailer-mounted
The full-colour RGB platform is planned with the power arrangement of its class rather than on a mains connection, so the released figures for the HK-PTMS-CS-RGB will state the power arrangement and the cabinet together.

— Procurement Case
01
The HK-PTMS-CS-RGB is a planned full-colour RGB platform, so it carries no published figures yet. The amber and five-colour models on the same platform are published with all five specification groups and can be specified today.
02
Because the HK-PTMS-CS-RGB is not released, it is not offered for quotation. Registering interest puts you in front of the release rather than behind it — the released figures reach you before the page is published.
03
The platform is planned for trailer-mounted configuration with its own solar power, so the site needs no generator and no cabling, and the compliance path for your market is confirmed at the configuration stage.
04
Every figure for the HK-PTMS-CS-RGB is either published with the platform or listed as to be confirmed — no placeholder numbers, no borrowed figures from another model.
— Before You Specify
Compact Format & Display Performance
A compact full-colour RGB trailer gives high-resolution full-matrix graphics within a small roadside footprint: a municipality can render multi-colour safety symbols — red, green, blue, white, amber — on city streets where an oversized portable message board would block lane access. On this page the model is the HK-PTMS-CS-RGB, which is in development; the amber and five-colour compact models are published and available for specification today.
A compact RGB display uses a high-density LED matrix, which keeps multi-colour symbols and text readable over the short-to-medium braking distances that matter on low-speed arterials and school zones — typically 50–150 m. The legibility distance itself follows the published pixel pitch and character height, and both are released with the platform rather than quoted in advance.
Yes. The low-profile board and compact trailer frame are intended for tunnel approach and parking-structure advisory positions where clearance and turn radius are limited. Mast height and overall transport dimensions are published with the platform, so clearance is checked before a site is committed.
Power, Towing & Control
The platform is planned around an efficient LED module design, 2 × 360 W of solar and 2 × 250 Ah AGM storage, with automatic dimming that cuts draw in low light. Autonomy for a given site is confirmed per configuration against the insolation profile — it is not published as a single figure.
The chassis is built for road tow: a 2,000 lb (907 kg) axle with a 5-on-4.5 in. idler hub, a double-eye leaf-spring group at 1.5 t (3,300 lb) gross and ST205/75 D15 tyres. Towing vehicle requirements are confirmed against the completed trailer weight, which is published with the platform.
Vehicle speed radar is a published option: the controller takes the radar input and runs the unit as a dynamic speed display, showing driver speed with colour-coded feedback. The threshold is set to the posted limit per site and the integration is agreed as a configuration item at ordering.
Message management runs from phone, tablet or PC over 4G, with GPS position reporting and an open API and SDK for an existing fleet platform. Controller protocol support, NTCIP 1203 included, is confirmed per configuration.
Compliance, Price & Supply
Compliance is supplied as a configuration path rather than asserted on the page: MUTCD configuration options for North America, EN 12966 compatible configuration for Europe and the UK, and AS 4852.2 configuration options for Australia and New Zealand. Chromaticity and symbol sets are confirmed against the project specification before shipment.
A compact trailer reduces material, manufacturing and container cost, and HANKUN quotes factory-direct per unit and for fleet volumes. For the HK-PTMS-CS-RGB specifically, quotation starts when the platform is released — register interest and the released configuration and price band reach you first.
HANKUN builds trailer-mounted VMS units with weather-sealed enclosures and galvanised structural frames and supports them worldwide; the enclosure protection rating and the test documentation are confirmed per configuration and supplied with the unit.
